Visual Cortex Labs

Visual Cortex Instruments Lab

Students intuitively know that something is heavy or lightweight, because they have daily experience touching heavy and lightweight things. Students have much less access to things that rotate around axes with different moments of inertia, and even less access to electric and magnetic fields that they don’t even see. Students who gain physical understanding in these topics are able to say “ah, but the moment of inertia is too big”, or “the magnetic field lines are not in that direction”, or ” the electric field is amplified by the edge effect”.

Physical understanding is gained while doing manual activities that allow students to dissect a problem to find a solution and directly prove a core principle. Students don’t have to simply believe the core principles taught in lectures, they can test them and convince themselves of it! We believe that any real physical understanding is enhanced by the technology that can make it.

Our lab equipment and lab writeups are designed so that students can gain a physical understanding of the core physics concepts while using strong engineering methods and concepts. Click the buttons below to access our labs!
